Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program

These loans are available to eligible students enrolled at least half-time and who do not demonstrate financial need. The loan was created so that any student, regardless of income, could obtain a Federal Stafford Loan. Unlike the Subsidized Stafford Loan, the student is responsible for the interest that occurs on the loan while the student is enrolled in school and  any deferment period. A student may borrow up to $4,000 for the first and second academic years. The loan amounts will be pro-rated for academic years less than nine months. Repayment of the loan begins six months after graduation or termination of studies, and the minimum monthly payment amount is based on the amount borrowed but no less than $50. Like the Subsidized Stafford Loan, deferment options are also available for those who qualify. The interest rate is variable and the maximum interest rate on the Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is currently 8.25%. A student will be obligated for a 3% origination fee on each Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan received.
